Black cumin oil also known as pharaoh’s oil, is extracted by cold pressing the seeds of Nigella sativa. Black cumin oil is rich in thymoquinone which is believed to provide a whole host of positive benefits for the body. Besides this, it also contains a lot of vitamins and minerals.

This oil can be used cold in dishes or applied to the skin as it reduces inflammation and calms the skin.

  • ¼ cup black cumin seed oil,
  • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil,
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar,
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey,
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard,
  • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped or grated
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

Whisk together ingredients until well-combined. Drizzle onto salads or grain-based sides, or use it as a dip for veggies. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Sustainability

Much of the black cumin oil sold is produced with Egyptian black cumin seeds. As Ekoto's Black cumin seed oil is produced in Austria, we and certifying bodies manage to keep a good eye out for truly good practices. 14er Bio-Öle also has to follow EU norms of cultivation. This, together with their progressive beliefs, makes the products produced by 14er Bio-Öle of a high standard and quality. After cold pressing the black cumin seeds to extract oil, there is a solid residue left which is termed as press cake. The press cake is believed to have a good protein content and can be used to feed animals or used as an organic fertilizer.

As the farm is located relatively closely to Ekoto's HQ and as the farm presses the oil on-site, a concentrated form is shipped for a small amount of miles. This makes the food miles a lot more sustainable than the standard globalised food chain of Black Cumin Oil

Producer

14er Bio-Öle is located in the eastern lower part of Austria. 14er Bio-Öle practices something called a dam culture system. This allows them to efficiently use water and block out weeds. With this system, the layers of the earth are only aerated, not heavily turned over. Loose dams are drawn with a dam device. Due to this loose processing, the surface is not pressed but loosened up and crumbly. This creates a much larger surface. Nutrients, sunlight & water can be better absorbed and stored. The dams also have their own microclimate, the sunlight does not hit the ground with the same intensity everywhere, there are temperature differences and air currents. The aim is to have the soil all crumbly, humus-rich, well aerated, sufficiently moist and easy for roots to penetrate. The company has their own oil press where they cold press black cumin seeds and a few other types of seeds as well. This keeps our chain extremely short, putting the value where it should be.
