Use

Clip-top jars can be used for a wide variety of things! The aesthetics of the glass jars is a lot nicer than the plastic containers and packaging we often use nowadays. Cabinets full of plastic packaging is no longer of this day and age. Bring calmness into your house and organise your kitchen with a variety of swing-top jars

- Storage of dry goods, such as grains, nuts, seeds, pulses, flours, pasta and alike

- Preservation of vegetables by means of pickling

- Keep your fresh baked cookies fresh for longer

- Use the small jars to serve a dessert

- Organise your fridge by using clip-top jars

- Make you own jam or marmalade in the fruit season

- Save up protein-rich water after boiling pulses, rice and alike in the fridge, to use later that week to (partly) replace water in your soup.

- Create a little bio-tope in a large clip-top jar

Sustainability

Beside its aesthetics, also sustainability is an important factor when choosing storage containers like Ekoto's clip-top jar. Unlike many other materials, glass can be recycled endlessly. The production requires high temperatures and therefore quite some energy. The weight of glass makes it that transport consumes more energy as well. Therefore glass is not preferred to be used only once, hence we also recommend reusing single use glass jars from your groceries for storage or even as drinking glasses.

Our swing-top jar is made with a minimum of 65% recycled glass. The colour is therefore slightly less transparent, as sometimes brown or green glass also ends up with white glass recycling and slightly decreases the transparency of the material.

Many countries around the globe have easily accessible glass recycling infrastructures. As it is also financially attractive for glass manufacturers to use recycled glass over new glass, this practice is often done properly.

New glass is majorly made of quartz sand (also known as silica), there is an abundance of sand and due to the fact that glass can be endlessly recycled, we won't easily get a shortage of the silica. Quartz sand is often derived from riverbeds or sea beds, but could harm or destroy nature habitats, as the sand is widely available, areas with high nature value can be left untouched. The second largest ingredient is sodium carbonate. This ingredient decreases the temperature needed to melt silica, which saves energy. The third ingredient is sodium carbonate (also known as soda ash), often used as an ingredient for softening drinking water. In glass manufacturing it is also used to lower the needed heat for melting glass as well as to make glass insoluble.

Our search for clip-top jars, that also met our sustainability and transparency requirements, took a long time. When we were looking for the jars, we could not find a retailer who communicated the origin of their products. When looking for factories, we mostly came across factories from China or a factory from Italy. Shipping a heavy product as glass should be limited as much as possible, in our opinion. The factory in Italy used a rather low percentage of recycled glass, and therefore we knew we had to continue our search. Finally we found NUVC in Germany and we could place our first order of 4 pallets. As we don't want to ship partly empty trucks, we collaborate with another larger regional retailer in the Netherlands to fill trucks and lower our impact on the climate.

Producer

Noelle + von Campe is a glass manufacturer in Boffzen, Lower Saxony, Germany. The company has a long history rooting back to 1866. The company has survived hard times and almost total closure of the factory if it wasn't for their loyal employees. Now NUVC produces 1 out of every 6 glass bottles in Germany and they also produce the authentic looking clip-top jars that we sell here at Ekoto.

NUVC actively supports employees who want to take care of their family next to their job. More social work is being organised in a social workplace where the clip-top jars are assembled. This assembly process remains hand labour.
