The yellow flowering Camelina Sativa captures the freshness of spring and comes out beautifully when pressed into a pure oil with a light creamy, earthy aromatic profile. It easily replaces any cooking oil, but tastes great on salads, in dressings, pesto or in marinades. Camelina oil has a great balance in omega 3-6-9 polyunsaturates and is rich in antioxidants.

Farmer Emiel focuses on the management of nature by applying natural practices. His herd of deep red cattle roams the heath and forest fields in Southern Netherlands. Over the last 5 years Emiel has been experimenting with Camelina Sativa and a few other oil-rich crops. Emiel presses the oil himself with a large oil press and the remaining presscake is used as feed for the cattle in winter. That makes the complete cycle of circular farming.

Cooking

You can use camelina oil as a replacer of any other cooking oil. Though, as it is such a novel product, you may want to give it the stage it deserves. The flavour comes out better when used cold. It can be used for salads, pesto, marinades and sauces, but it is also a perfect finishing touch for a thick soup. And not to forget, camelina oil is thé perfect match for asparagus!

Details for heating: Camelina oil can be heated, though, as with many oils, its recommended to not overheat the oil in order not to lose the health benefits. Science is not entirely sure when the degradation of the beneficial nutrition occurs, but it is recommended to stay below the smoke point which roughly lays around 240 degrees Celsius.

Nutrition

At Ekoto we always prefer whole foods. Food as it can be found in nature has a great balance in nutrients and supplies more micro nutrients than extracted food. However, for those moments you want to use extracted or refined products, we do our utter best to produce the best quality products together with our farmers! Just like with this Camelina oil from farmer Emiel!

There is no reference intake for omega 3 fatty acid (the most needed omega acid), however the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) says that 250mg of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of heart disease (Source: EFSA). This means that only 1 gram of our Camelina Sativa oil is enough to get this daily intake of omega-3. With just a few drops of oil added to your daily, you are set!

Sustainability

The Camelina Sativa is grown around the corner from where Ekoto ships all its orders to your doorstep. So, the impact of transport is minimised. The production itself also has a limited impact. Camelina is rarely produced in western Europe and is a great addition to our landscapes. It can grow on poor sandy soils, where many other crops are not able to grow. And lastly the farm is certified organic, meaning that no artificial chemicals are used.

Producer

Less than 15 kilometres away from Ekoto's warehouse, lives farmer Emiel with his family just outside the city of Breda with forests surrounding his fields. Emiel places his focus on the management of the land, for example on land from the government organisation for forestry and management of nature reserves. His cattle grazes these lands in a rotation, whilst no intensive farm practices are allowed.

In 2014 Emiel started to experiment with Camelina Sativa. He learned by trial and error but he soon discovered that the oil pressed from Camelina was both full of nutrition as well as rich in aroma's! He bought a large oil press and set up everything needed for pressing and bottling. Now, the whole process stays on the farm and the remaining press cake is a delicious treat for the animals.

Ekoto is looking together with Emiel to grow other oil crops locally and work more together to pursue our goals of sustainable production!
